Source of Flooding

 

Grangemouth and the surrounding communities are at risk of flooding from multiple sources and these floods could happen at any time.

 

Firstly the Firth of Forth Estuary is a coastal body of water and those communities nearest the coast are at risk of coastal flooding due to exceptionally high tides, storm surges and wave overtopping. The impact of high tides stretch far inland and dominates the lower River Carron and River Avon and the Grange Burn up as far as Zetland Park.

Second, is flooding from the rivers and burns following extreme and prolonged rainfall. Properties located further inland are more at risk from river flooding rather than flooding due to high tides.

Finally is the risk of surface water flooding. Surface water flooding occurs due to intense rainfall over a relatively short period of time with the rain being so heavy the existing road and other drainage systems cannot cope with the volume of water which flows over the ground surface and flooding lower lying ground.
